A new study, which included ICARE participants, found that BRCA1/2 carriers with ovarian cancer have a relatively LOW risk of breast cancer.
The hazard ratio for breast cancer after ovarian cancer compared to no ovarian cancer was 0.18 (95% CI: 0.12-0.27; P<0.0001). This means that getting breast cancer after already having ovarian cancer was MUCH less common.
Why is this important?
- This means that BRCA carriers have a relatively low risk of breast cancer after ovarian cancer
- Therefore, risk-reducing mastectomy may not routinely recommended, but may be an option for long term survivors
- Breast screening is reasonable through breast MRI and mammograms
