CDH1 mutation carriers are at higher risk for diffuse gastric cancer (men and women) and lobular breast cancer (women). Current strategies to manage high risks of gastric cancer include prophylactic gastrectomy (i.e., removal of the stomach), which can have severe physical and psychological implications.
A recent study found that men have a higher risk of gastric cancer (42%) compared to women (33%), both of which are lower than previously thought. Additionally, women have a risk of breast cancer of 55%, which is higher than previously thought.
