A new study of 25,591 women found:
- 9.1% had a low genetic risk for breast cancer
- those with low genetic risk could potentially safely delay screening by 5 to 10 years without any impact on their health
Based on genetic risk, identifying individuals at:
- higher risk gives an opportunity to offer screening earlier and more often
- lower risk gives an opportunity to have screening delayed to a time when risk becomes high enough to warrant screening
This study challenges a one-size-fits all mammogram screening approach. This approach could possibly reduce rising healthcare costs by reallocating resources and lower unnecessary anxiety that comes with frequent screenings, and even prevent unnecessary procedures.
