A recent study among BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers, which included ICARE participants, found that the risk for peritoneal cancer following a preventive bilateral oophorectomy was higher among BRCA1 carriers than BRCA2 carriers. Specifically, among 6310 females, the annual risk of peritoneal cancer was 0.14% for BRCA1 carriers and 0.06% for BRCA2 carriers, and the 20-year cumulative risk of peritoneal cancer from the date of oophorectomy was 2.7% for BRCA1 carriers and 0.9% for BRCA2 carriers. This information shows that removing the ovaries not only greatly lowers cancer risks for ovarian cancer, but also the remaining risk to develop peritoneal cancer is very low.
